Honda Radio - 'ENTER CODE'
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011) Honda CR-V in getting the radio serial number without removing it from the dashboard, retrieving the security code online and entering it to restore radio and CD player functions.

Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles with similar 6 compact disc changer radio units including the security code theft deterrent feature such as the Pilot, Insight, CR-Z, Accord, Civic, Fit, Crosstour, Odyssey, Ridgeline, TSX, ILX, TLX, TL, RLX, RDX and MDX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

If your Honda vehicle lost battery power for more than a few minutes due to a dead battery, jump starting a weak battery or replacing the battery, you might see 'ENTER CODE' on the display the next time you turned on the radio.

Before going through the radio serial number and security code retrieval process, check your glove box and owner's manual.

Honda includes a small card or sticker which lists both the radio serial number and anti-theft security code number.

On this 2011 CR-V there was a white sticker attached to the left inner side wall of the glove box with both the codes printed on it.

Other vehicles might have a business card sized piece of paper inside the leather folder that contains the owner's manual.

If you already have the security code, simply key it in to the radio using the '1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6' preset buttons. Be sure to carefully enter the code since you only have a limited number of attempts (or 'tries') to enter the code before being locked out. If you do get locked out, just disconnect the negative battery terminal for about 15 to 20 minutes to reset the radio.

Owners of 2001 and newer Honda vehicles can display the radio serial number by following the steps below.

(Unfortunately, owners of 2000 and older Honda vehicles need to physically remove the radio from the dashboard by using some automotive pry bar tools and locate the serial number sticker on the back of the unit.)

Serial # & Code - Glove Box

Press Power - Turn Off Radio
The first step is to turn off the radio by pressing the power button once.

Turn Off Ignition Switch

Turn Switch To 'On / Accessory'

Turn the ignition switch all the way back to the 'Off' position.

Then turn the ignition switch forward to the 'Run' or 'Accessory' position but do not start the engine.

Press & Hold 1 & 6

Turn On Radio- SN Displayed
Press and hold both the number 1 and number 6 radio preset buttons.

While still holding down the 1 and 6 preset buttons, tap the power button to turn on the radio.

The 10 digit radio serial number will be shown on the display for about 5 to 10 seconds. I'd recommend either quickly taking a picture with your phone or have someone write it down for you.

To retrieve the radio unlock code online, you'll need the vehicle's VIN number, the phone number and zip code that you gave Honda when you originally purchased the vehicle (or the current information they have on file for you), and the radio's serial number.

Then visit the Honda Radio Unlock Code website (link opens in a new page) and enter your information.

If you prefer, you may also call the Honda of America customer service number at 1-800-999-1009 or visit your local Honda or Acura dealership for assistance.
